10:25 am: for those of you who saw an earlier post where I quoted a description of morality it gave, and were saddened by the inability to read all of it,
Digger (http://www.diggercomic.com/) has moved to a site that allows free access to all of its archives. (yay!!!)

10:44 am: so, I haven't updated in a while - perhaps i should.

Sunday went to a cotehardie making workshop a SCAdian was holding. the group of us all made patterns to be used for making cotes in the future. this involves getting sewen into the fabric you are making the pattern out of so it is sized correctly to you and supports where it needs to. interesting to say the least. looking at the pieces that were created, you don't necessarily believe they should fit on you, but that's what happens when you are dealing with a very fitted dress.

a what? )

anyways, it was interesting. you can definitely tell what it would look like on your figure just off the sewn and pinned on pattern fabric.
note to self - need to get fabric to make dresses out of.
we didn't get to sleeve patterns either - which I'm told can be extremely unhelpful. there were vague plans to hold another workshop later to start making dresses, and posibly do sleeve patterns.

[info]rec_thug and another guy also attended the workshop - although it ended up focusing just on the female variant. it was noted that the initial fitting for the guys is very similar up to a certain point. plans were made for them to meet up with our teacher at other points in time to get patterns and such made.

Saturday, there was raiding of gaming stores for minis and such. ended up with a mini for the oriental Friday D&D game. not exact, but probably as close as I'm going to come to a female sohei wielding a naginata. (note from two sessions ago - crits while power attacking with a two handed weapon are fun. waaaay fun.)

still need one for the Sunday game though. gahh. Eh, I'll find one eventually.

oh, Sunday night I had meat pies for dinner. (leftovers from feast of Chimeron last year that we finally remembered were in the freezer) still tasty. minor amusement over people's reactions to them back at the event. really guys, they are made with pork.

now back to the work week. can it be Thursday afternoon now?

02:41 pm: what - i wants stuff.
I wants stuff. so other people might as well.

The first five people to respond to this post will get something made by me! My choice. For you.
This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:
- What I create will be just for you.
- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make!
- You will receive your item before the end of the year (or sooner).
- You will have no clue what the item is going to be. It could be a story or poetry. It could be a piece of handmade jewelry or an art doll. I may draw, paint, collage or knit something. I might bake you something and mail it to you. Who knows? Not you, that's for sure!
- I reserve the right to do something extremely strange.
The catch? Oh, the catch is that you have to repost this meme and make and send out five surprises of your own.

hey look, a use for my randomly acquired craft skills. or perhaps not - depending on who responds.

11:30 am: poem for thougth
It jumped into my head and I had to go look up the full wording for it - so I though i would share.
I always liked Shel Silverstein poems.

No difference
By -Shel Silverstein

Small as a peanut,
Big as a giant,
We're all the same size
When we turn off the light.

Rich as a sultan,
Poor as a mite,
We're all worth the same
When we turn off the light.

Red, black or orange,
Yellow or white,
We all look the same
When we turn off the light.

So maybe the way
To make everything right
Is for God to just reach out
And turn off the light!

12:59 pm: so I should post about how awesome Queen of Hearts was, however - being me - I've been distracted by a meme. figures.

MEME: Go over to Wikipedia and enter your birth date (month/day) and then pick 3 events, 2 births and 1 holiday that occurred on the day of your birthday. Then post the results.

December 28
Events
1612 - Galileo Galilei becomes the first astronomer to observe the planet Neptune, although he mistakenly cataloged it as a fixed star.
1912 - The first municipally owned streetcars take to the streets in San Francisco, California.
1945 - The Congress of the United States officially recognizes the Pledge of Allegiance.

Births
1922 - Stan Lee, American comic book writer
1969 - Linus Torvalds, Finnish computer programmer

Holiday
R.C. Saints - Feast of the Holy Innocents, also known as Childermas, commemorating the Massacre of the Innocents on order of King Herod the Great. In Spain and Latin American countries the festival is celebrated in a manner similar to April Fool's Day.

Cool. several other interesting births and happenings - but this will do for now.

the event was such a good time for me, and I suspect the rest of Chimeron, because we quickly discarded any thoughts of winning combat stuff in favor of enjoying it and putting up a good fight against far superior numbers. oh, and by the way guys - we used little to no spells that weren't infinite casting in any of the battles. exceptions - Tarnisha used repair armors in the first castle battle, transmute self, and the forges and a few raises that were used in the bridge battles (I think most to all of the raises were cast in the one against Folkestone). oh, and wizards war I suspect - but that isn't really a surprise.

Shoot the moon. Shoot the moon.

10:01 am: saw a fawn on the way into work this morning. was getting off the highway onto surface streets and it was wandering in front of the stop line for people turning right. Its odd how uncoordinated they are just walking while still getting around and not falling. it stood there for a moment staring at the car as i came to a stop behind it, then dashed back off into the underbrush to the side of the road. much more coordinated running than just walking. didn't see any Mom around. slightly worried that its going to get itself run over, but very little I can do about that.

oddly surreal actually. for a minute, as I came to a stop, I was wondering what I was going to do if it stayed in front of my car. I'm guessing it was no taller than my knee, and obviously had no idea what to make of where it was.

11:49 am: "OK. Morality in a nutshell.

Don't hurt people if you can avoid it. Don't steal stuff unless you're starving or it's really, really important. Work hard. Pay your bills. Try to help others. Always double-check your math if there are explosives involved. if you screwed it up, you need to see it gets fixed. And don't eat anything that talks. If it doesn't fall under one of those categories, just do the best you can."

11:16 am: cherry limeade sunkist is way tasty.

huh, you say? where did that come from?

I gave up mountain dew, and cut back on sodas, for lent - and so when i was drinking sodas i started branching out to other types i hadn't tried. I ran into this cherry limeade when someplace didn't have the orange soda i was looking for, and its really quite good.
it reminds me, actually, of a berry lime sublime smoothie from jamba juice. the sweet with a touch of citrusy tartness.

having gotten that random thought off my mind, life is going pretty well overall.

and now, the prior mem filled out for me instead of one of my characters

imagine that you have a box, and inside the box are seven items that perfectly describe your character. From their thoughts, ambitions, history, physical characteristics, etc. You can even go into detail on what KIND of box that your seven items are in.

a small to medium size brown cardboard packing box. looks like is has been used to mail something at least once, and has various labels written on the cardboard in pen and sharpie, some of then scribbled out again. bottom is packing taped closed, and the top has the half strips on its flaps from having been closed with tape then cut open again.

1) well-worn paperback copy of 'Dealing with Dragons'
2) really old rainbow tye-dye t-shirt
3) silver pin of a rose
4) beaten up and worn pair of running shoes
5) AYSO referee badge
6) programmable logic device (who's name currently escapes me) used in digital design type college classes.

08:40 am: forwarding post so more people at least know its happening
I've seen this posted a couple of places, and am posting it myself to spread the awareness that its happening.

For those of you who don't already know, there has been a strike scheduled for Friday, March 21st, 2008, during which we hope to have many members of LiveJournal provide LJ with absolutely no content for twenty-four hours.

This means no posting and no commenting. If you post elsewhere and have it set up to be posted through a feed on LiveJournal, don't do it. Stay away from LiveJournal for twenty-four hours. That can't be too hard, can it?

I know some of you are probably quite active on LiveJournal and will find it hard to stay away for an entire day, just as I will, but this is something that needs to be done, to show the people running LiveJournal that we're watching the changes they are making, that we're paying attention, that we're discontent, and that we want to be heard and taken in to consideration. We are not simply users who can be tossed to the side and ignored. We are the people who make up LiveJournal.

Without us, without the content we create, without our words, our voices, our creativity, our participation, there would be no LiveJournal. This is a fact, and it needs to be realized and understood and then taken in to consideration when making decisions regarding the way that LiveJournal is run. The strike is only a few days away, so there isn't all too much time to prepare.

While this is unfortunate, it isn't enough to keep this strike from taking place. It will take place, the second it is meant to, and it would be best to have as many people take part as possible. Please, spread the word. Spread it fast. There are only a few days to organize this. If you find that you care about LiveJournal or care about the people you interact with on LiveJournal or simply want it to remain a place where you can entertain yourself without constant censorship and money-hungry practices being thrown in without the consideration of those who use the service, act now. If you don't wish to spread the word, that is fine, but please: refrain from using LiveJournal on Friday, March 21st. Do something else for a change. It's for a good cause. :)

For background on this strike and why it is being held, please read the following posts:
http://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/394838.html
http://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/395310.html

To find out exactly when the strike begins and ends, depending on where you are located, please see this:
http://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/395125.html

What's this about?

* It's about free and ad-free LiveJournal accounts being abolished for new members, ignoring the advice from the newly-formed Advisory Board.
* It's about LJ staff trying to sneak this decision in under the radar, and when people found out, telling the users it was done 'to make the signup process less confusing'.
* It's about LJ staff failing to apologize for trying to hide the facts from view and for lying about the actual reasons for their actions.
* And finally, it's about the latest decision to hide certain user interests from the list of Most Popular Interests, some of them being fanfiction, bisexuality, sex and depression. This decision was not announced or explained in any way. Users found out for themselves.

12:44 pm: movie meme part two
so, three movies not guessed yet, here are a second quote from each of them

1)the rock (hey, another Sean Conroy movie. i was amused by the back story of the character he played.)
"Well, I'm one of those fortunate people who like my job, sir. Got my first chemistry set when I was seven, blew my eyebrows off, we never saw the cat again, been into it ever since."

"It's a cholinesterase inhibitor. Stops the brain from sending nerve messages down the spinal cord within thirty seconds. Any epidermal exposure or inhalation and you'll know. A twinge at the small of your back as the poison seizes your nervous system... DO NOT MOVE THAT! Your muscles freeze, you can't breathe, you spasm so hard you break your own back and spit your guts out. But that's after your skin melts off."

3)The Fugitive (a thinky action movie. some really amusing quotes too)
"Every time I look in the mirror, pal - except for the beard, of course!"

"Give it up Richard, you don't have any time, Chicago police department thinks you're a cop killer, they WILL shoot you on sight!"

10)Chronicles of Narnia (dude, she has a chainmail dress. how neat is that? i enjoyed the original story, and the movie did a good job at it)
"My father went away to war too. But that was a long, long time ago..."

"If he tells us to hurry up one more time, I am going to make him into a big, fluffy hat."

10:45 pm: music meme
Step 1: Put your music player on shuffle.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 30-20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Strike through the songs when someone guesses both artist and track title correctly. Yes the artist too.
Step 4: For those who are guessing -- looking the lyrics up on a search engine is CHEATING!
Step 5: If you like the game, post your own.

running of my general good songs play list as i don't even like some of the music on my computer. songs with no lyrics skipped.

several of these are way easy, some are hard.

EDIT: if it doesn't list an artist, there are several and one of them (possibly not the one i was thinking of) has been guessed or I am unsure of the artist but the one suggested sound reasonable, if there are question marks, the artist has yet to be named

05:19 pm: Think of 15 of your favorite movies, go to IMDB and get a quote for each. Post the quotes. When someone guesses the movie add the movie name and the person who got it right. No cheating! Meaning, don't go to IMBD or use google to search.
------
EDITED: added a twelfth, put up answers for the ones that were correctly guessed.
two more have been guessed.
------

1)"Well, I'm one of those fortunate people who like my job, sir. Got my first chemistry set when I was seven, blew my eyebrows off, we never saw the cat again, been into it ever since."

2) Beauty and the Beast (my favorite movie growing up. Belle is awesome)
"As you can see, the psuedo-facade was stripped away to reveal a minimalist rococo design. Note the unusual inversely vaulted ceilings. This is yet another example of the late neoclassic Baroque period. And, as I always say, 'if it's not Baroque, don't fix it!' "

3)"Every time I look in the mirror, pal - except for the beard, of course!"

4)Monsters Inc. (in that grating nasally almost teacher voice)
"None of this ever happened, gentlemen. And I don't want to see any paperwork on it."

5)Star Trek 4: The voyage home (the breaking ship, and Spock, and the whales)
"My God man. Do you want an acute case on your hands? This woman has immediate post-parandial, upper-abdominal distention."
"What did you say she has?"
"Cramps."

6)The Princess Bride (a cult classic. INCONCEIVABLE was a bit too obvious)
"Look, I don't mean to be rude but this is not as easy as it looks, so I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't distract me."

7)Finding Forrester (a very good thinky movie. also, sean connery is, as always, an awsome actor)
"Let me ask you a question... those two foul shots at the end of the game... did you miss them, or did you *miss* them?"

8)Mulan (the more recent awesome disney movie. the chick beating everyone up through smarts is always a positive)
"The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all."

9)Ocean's 11 (because EMP machines are fun)
"A pinch is a device which creates, like, a cardiac arrest for any broadband electrical circuitry. Better yet, a pinch is a bomb - now, but without the bomb. See, when a nuclear weapon detonates, it unleashes an electromagnetic pulse which shuts down any power source within its blast radius. Now that tends not to matter in most cases, because the nuclear weapon usually destroys anything you might need power for anyway. But see, a pinch creates a similar electromagnetic pulse, but without the fuss of mass destruction and death. So instead of Hiroshima, you'd be getting the seventeenth century."

10)"My father went away to war too. But that was a long, long time ago..."

11)Finding Nemo (the turtles were very cool)
"Good afternoon. We're gonna have a great jump today. Okay, first crank a hard cutback as you hit the wall. There's a screaming bottom curve, so watch out. Remember: rip it, roll it, and punch it."

12)Who Framed Rodger Rabbit (an amusing lighthearted movie. 'shave and a haircut...')
"P-p-please, Eddie! Don't throw me out. Don't you realize you're making a big mistake? I didn't kill anybody. I swear! The whole thing's a set up. A scam, a frame job. Ow! Eddie, I could never hurt anybody. Oow! My whole purpose in life is to make... people... laugh!"
